Anatomy of a Hand

Pre-Flop

Every player is dealt two cards face down, these are referred to as "hole cards". A round betting commences in which you can Check, Bet or Fold.

The Flop

Once betting has completed, three cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table, this is the flop. Another round of betting will commence.

The Turn

After the flop and another round of betting a fourth card is turned face up. Another round of betting commences.

The River

Once all bets are made after the turn a fifth and final card is placed face up, this is known as The River. The final round of betting then plays out.

Showdown

There are two ways to end a Texas Holdem Poker Hand. Players left in the hand after the river turn over their hole cards and the player with the best hand wins. Someone bets well enough that everyone else folds; this is the most typical ending to a hand. In the example to the right you would win with a Flush

Putting it all together

You are dealt two cards known as hole cards during the Pre-Flop. A round of betting follows. Remaining players see The Flop and bet again. This is followed by another community card known as The Turn.  After a third round of betting, remaining players see The River.  A fourth a final round of betting is held, remaining players show their cards in The Showdown.
